Destination vacations are cool and all, but staycations can be just as fulfilling — and less stressful! Between saving on travel expenses and having an excuse to explore the tourist attractions around your hometown, staycations are arguably the ultimate form of vacation. But there is something to be said about the relaxing quality of a hotel or resort. But by making a few subtle (or not so subtle) changes to your home, you go from daily grind to staycation in a snap.
1. Upgrade your ceiling fans
From a practical perspective, wide-blade ceiling fans can reduce the cost of your air conditioning. But the extra air that they stir up can create a breezy resort feel. Choose trendy designs that complement your decor. And don’t be stingy — they’re great for porches too.
2. Turn bathrooms into a spa space
You can easily give your bathroom a spa-like atmosphere with just a few tweaks. Creative storage can hide clutter and free up space for fluffy matching towels and candles. Soften the lighting, add a spa-quality vessel sink, and some low-light plants.
3. Give your countertops some love
The countertops in your last favorite getaway likely reflected the area. Replace countertops with repurposed wood for a rustic getaway feel or quartz for sleek modern elegance.
4. Welcome fresh air with screen doors
Adding back and front screen doors allows you to let the sounds and fragrances of the season come into your home. These are often made of wood or metal, and let the fresh air in while keeping bugs and other pests out.
5. Make your porch more livable
When was the last time you showed your porch some love? Clean and prime your porch for summer, and then consider redecorating a little. Invest in pretty porch furniture like bamboo chairs and print cushions. Adding large potted plants can create a botanical garden atmosphere. A complementing table can turn the porch into the perfect space for an outdoor brunch.
6. Install an outdoor pool or hot tub
Swimming pools and hot tubs go a long way in making home relaxing while also adding to the value of your home. If you already have a pool or hot tub, make sure it’s in tiptop shape. Adding accessories that invite lounging by pool will help make it an even more enjoyable experience.
7. Set up an outdoor bar cart
Buy or build an outdoor bar cart and take happy hour outside. A cart can be moved to take in the best seasonal view around your house. Check out ideas for using wooden pallets for creative outdoor bar ideas.
8. Build an outdoor firepit
Gather around an outdoor fire and chat over drinks with neighbors and make s’mores with the kids. You can find some clever DIY fire pit ideas or purchase freestanding outdoor ones from your home improvement store. Surround with furniture
9. Add a fountain or two
Create the illusion of a babbling brook deep in the forest with an outdoor garden fountain. A variety of them are available from Zen-tiered pots to fiberglass rock fountains. Or if you’re more inclined to DIY, you can make your own with a few large stones and a pump.
10. Install a top-notch sound system
Music soothes the soul and can create a party atmosphere at home. Add a quality sound system with good speakers and turn on your favorite music to create a vacation mood.
